Every insurer in this directory is reviewed on an ongoing basis by our advisory board against 5 professional criteria — Reliability, Benefits Value, Flexibility, Pricing, and Admin & Claims. Insurers are re-rated as regulations, reinsurance backing, and claims behaviour change, so what you see here reflects our current standing recommendation, not a one-time listing.
No single insurer fits every risk
We represent more than 25 insurers precisely because medical, vehicle, home, factory/office, and professional liability cover each reward a different kind of underwriter. An insurer we rate highly for expat medical cover may not be who we'd recommend for a factory property policy. This profile tells you what William Russell is — and isn't — the right fit for.
How William Russell scores on our 5 criteria
Scored out of 5 on each criterion. See the full methodology for how we assess reliability, benefits, flexibility, pricing and claims handling across all partner insurers.
Reliability
Policies are designed in partnership with Allianz and underwritten via AWP Health & Life SA — William Russell Ltd and William Russell Europe SRL are separately authorised and regulated by the UK's FCA and Belgium's FSMA respectively, giving members dual regulatory oversight.
Benefits Value
Four health plan tiers (Bronze to Gold) plus separate life and income protection products, with life cover up to US$2,000,000 and the Elevate wellbeing platform (telemedicine, counselling, travel security) bundled on eligible plans.
Flexibility
Genuinely broad product range — health, life, and income protection can be bought separately or combined, with adjustable excesses and coverage zones, plus dedicated group plans for employers of any size.
Pricing
Positioned mid-to-premium rather than budget — a trade-off for the personal-service model and dual UK/Belgium regulatory backing, though currently softened by a running 15% discount on health plans.
Admin & Claims
No call centres — members reach named teams directly by phone or email, with a dedicated 24-hour emergency assistance line and claims turnaround praised consistently in independent Feefo reviews.
Personal-service expat insurance, backed by Allianz
William Russell was founded by Inez Cooper in 1992 to provide international health, life and income protection insurance to expats — with a deliberately personal service model: members reach named teams directly by phone or email rather than an anonymous call centre. The company insures individuals, families, remote workers, digital nomads, students, startups, SMEs, large corporates, charities and governmental organisations, with the largest concentration of members in the Far East, Middle East and East Africa, alongside growing coverage across Asia including Vietnam.
William Russell is not itself an insurance underwriter — plans are designed in partnership with Allianz and underwritten via AWP Health & Life SA, the same Allianz-group entity behind Allianz Care's own international plans. William Russell's own teams remain solely responsible for member experience, the technology behind it, and paying claims. Eligible members also get access to Elevate, a complementary platform bundling virtual doctor consultations, mental health counselling, well-being tracking and travel security assistance. A 15% discount on health plans is currently running.
Regulation & financial backing
- Plans designed with Allianz, underwritten via AWP Health & Life SA — William Russell itself is a managing/distribution entity, not the risk carrier.
- William Russell Ltd is authorised and regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA reference 309314), registered in England & Wales (company no. 02687939).
- William Russell Europe SRL is registered in Belgium with the Financial Services & Markets Authority (FSMA, no. 0731.975.658 RPM); its UK branch is separately FCA-authorised (reference 973067).
Who we recommend William Russell for
Ideal client profile
Expats, remote workers and business owners of any nationality who value being able to reach a named person by phone or email rather than a call centre, and who want the option to combine health, life and income protection under one relationship. Also a solid fit for employers of any size wanting group health, life or income protection benefits. Less suited to the most price-sensitive shoppers — William Russell competes on service and flexibility, not on being the cheapest plan on the directory.
Gold — Health Insurance
The most comprehensive of the four health tiers, with the widest benefit limits and the broadest outpatient, mental health and well-being cover.
Silver — Health Insurance
Strong core in-patient, cancer treatment and evacuation cover with a wider outpatient allowance than SilverLite.

Core hospital and cancer cover at a lower premium, with outpatient cover available as an add-on.

The same three product lines packaged for employers, for teams of any size, with dedicated group underwriting.
Elevate wellbeing platform
Virtual doctor appointments, mental health counselling, well-being tracking and travel security assistance, on eligible plans.
Common questions about William Russell

Is William Russell an insurance company?
No — William Russell provides insurance on behalf of Allianz group, designing the policies in partnership with Allianz and underwriting them via AWP Health & Life SA. William Russell's own teams handle member experience, access to doctors and hospitals, and paying claims.
Which health plan should I choose?
Four tiers are available — Bronze, SilverLite, Silver and Gold — moving from essential in-patient and evacuation cover up to the most comprehensive outpatient, mental health and well-being benefits. Life insurance and income protection are separate products that can be added independently.

To people of all nationalities living and working abroad, worldwide. Most members are concentrated in the Far East, Middle East and East Africa, with growing coverage across South America, Europe and Asia, including Vietnam.
What happens in a medical emergency?
Members call the 24-hour emergency medical assistance line, staffed year-round, 365 days a year — separate from the general enquiries line, which runs UK business hours.
How do I make a claim?
Contact William Russell as soon as you know you need treatment — claims and pre-authorisation requests go to a dedicated claims team by phone or email, not a shared inbox or call centre queue.
Can I get a quote quickly?
